MDI sees record cruise ship season

Mount Desert Island saw a record 107 cruise ships this tourist season, beating out the previous record of 97 ships set in 2008.

Harbormaster Charlie Phippen told the Bangor Daily News it was the first time in 20 years more than 100 cruise ships docked at Bar Harbor, with the last arriving Oct. 29 and carrying 2,114 passengers. Bar Harbor had anticipated 120 cruise ship visits this year, but saw 13 cancellations, mostly due to weather.

Eighty-five ship visits are currently scheduled for 2011.
