ME gets $1.3M in RGGI auction

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative's 10th carbon credit auction held last week will bring $1.3 million to Maine.

The Dec. 1 auction resulted in the sale of more than 24 million carbon credits for the 2009-2011 period and nearly 1.2 million for the 2012-2014 period at a price of $1.86 each, netting more than $48 million, according to a press release. Maine, one of 10 states that participate in the regional cap-and-trade program to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, will use its $1.3 million share to fund energy-efficiency programs. The state has earned more than $23 million since the auctions began in September 2008, in part funding large-scale energy-efficiency and combined heat and power conversion projects, according to the release.

In related news, federal stimulus money that helped fund Efficiency Maine home weatherization projects runs out Dec. 31, and the loss of funding for the state program could impact builders, energy auditors and contractors who saw business increase as homeowners sought to redeem tax credits through weatherization work, according to the Kennebec Journal. Efficiency Maine's Home Energy Savings rebate program, which was funded with $9 million in federal dollars, ends in 2011.
