A regional tourism event happening in northern Maine in 2014 has received a commitment from the state for $1 million in funding.
Jason Parent, Maine's representative for the World Acadian Congress, told the Bangor Daily News that Gov. Paul LePage's administration has committed to allocating $250,000 over the next four years to the cultural tourism event. The Maine delegation to the international organizing committee of the WAC recently met with state officials in economic development and tourism to discuss the event and funding, but it was unclear which department would kick in the $1 million.
Together, the St. John Valley of Maine, northwestern New Brunswick and southeastern Quebec are hosting the congress that celebrates Acadian culture, held every five years in a different location. The two-and-a-half-week-long festival is expected to bring as many as 50,000 people to the region and generate up to $50 million in economic impact. Funding for the $12 million event is slated to come from both countries' federal governments and the states and provinces, as well as donations. Mainebiz named Parent to the 2010 Next List.
