ME scores low in study of business climate

Maine ranks among the worst states for entrepreneurs, according to a new study by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council.

The Virginia-based council ranked states according to their public-policy climates for small business and entrepreneurship and put Maine at number 48, according to an SBE press release. The "Small Business Survival Index 2008" analyzed 34 major government-imposed or government-related costs affecting small businesses and entrepreneurs, including taxes, property rights and health and energy costs.

"A significant impediment to small business, entrepreneurship and investment is public policy gone awry," SBE Council Chief Economist Raymond Keating, the study's author, said in the release. Top-ranked states were South Dakota at number one, followed by Nevada. The lowest-ranked state was New Jersey at 50, followed by the District of Columbia at 51.
