ME selected for electronic records push

Maine's primary care physicians will be able to access up to $29 million dollars through a new federal program designed to reward use of electronic health records.

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Medicare project will pay 100 primary care practices in Maine based on how widely they use the computerized records, according to the Portland Press Herald. Electronic records are considered more efficient and less vulnerable to human error. Participating providers could receive payments of up to $58,000 per doctor and $290,000 per practice over the program's five-year duration.

President George W. Bush has said he wants most patients to have electronic files by 2014; currently only 10-15% of practices nationwide use electronic records, the paper reported. Maine is one of 12 states chosen for the project.
