Maine Senate President Kevin Raye, R-Perry, has announced his official candidacy for the state's 2nd Congressional District seat.
Raye today has submitted the necessary paperwork to run for the seat as a Republican, according to a press release. He said he's been considering a candidacy for the past several weeks and has received support from residents in the midcoast, northern and eastern parts of the state. Issues he plans to focus on include job creation, federal spending and debt and "making Congress work better for the American people." Raye in 2010 was re-elected for his fourth term in the Maine Senate, and he also owns Raye's Mustard Mill in Easport with his wife, Karen, and previously was chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.
Raye ran for the 2nd District seat in 2002, winning the four-way GOP primary and securing 48% of the vote in the general election, losing to Democrat Mike Michaud, who still holds the seat. Michaud was re-elected in November 2010.
