A Minneapolis-based chain of medical imaging clinics has opened a new one in Auburn, bringing the company’s Maine footprint to more than a dozen sites.
Rayus Radiology, owned by private equity firm Wellspring Capital Management LLC, now provides diagnostic imaging — such as high-field MRI, CT and X-ray scans — at 600 Turner St., Suite 1.
"We are excited to continue to grow and invest in Maine," said Robert Cherney, executive vice president of operations at Rayus, in a news release Tuesday. "Opening this multi-modality center in Auburn allows us to further expand our ability to provide the highest quality care to patients in the most convenient outpatient location."
Rayus already operates four other outpatient imaging centers in Maine, as well as other sites within health care providers such as Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.
Founded in 1981 as the Center for Diagnostic Imaging, the company changed its name to Rayus this year and added 21 new centers across the U.S., bringing the total to 150. Rayus has more than 3,000 employees.
Wellspring, a New York firm that specializes in middle-market investments, acquired the company two years ago.
There are more than 6,000 independent imaging centers in the U.S., according to a 2020 report by consultant IBISWorld. While the industry is highly fragmented, private and public investment in recent years has consolidated many of the imaging providers. RadNet Inc. was the largest in the country last year, with 331 outpatient centers.
Outpatient centers and physician offices provided imaging services with revenues of $19 billion, a total that has been growing annually by single digits.
