Mental health hospital to lay off 45

The Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center in Bangor is laying off 45 employees as part of its effort to balance its budget in the wake of a state funding cut. The hospital plans to cut a total of 91 positions, about half of which are unfilled, by April 28.

The hospital told employees about the layoffs Monday and announced them publicly yesterday, although the layoffs had already been anticipated, according to the Bangor Daily News. The majority of the laid-off people are mental health care practitioners. Last year, the Legislature approved cutting the center’s state funding by $2.5 million, which will also lead to a drop in federal funding. The layoffs will allow the center to meet its state-mandated budget. Following the layoffs, the hospital will have about 188 positions.

The center serves about 350 patients a year and currently has about 51 beds despite a license to operate 100.
