MERC plan piques community interest

A plan to build a new $15 million trash processing operation to replace the one in Biddeford has garnered the interest of a few communities, but none have been identified.

Biddeford Mayor Joanne Twomey told the Portland Press Herald a few towns are interested in becoming the home of the trash processing facility, which would relocate those operations from the Maine Energy Recovery Co. trash incinerator in Biddeford. A task force charged with deciding the fate of MERC in October developed a plan that included moving the processing operations outside downtown Biddeford to enhance the economic development of the area. Twomey would not say what community was the frontrunner, and told the Press Herald that nothing has been finalized.

The new facility would also include a recycling center and provide the host community with low-cost electricity and 15 to 20 new jobs.
