NewPage restarts chipping operations

NewPage in Rumford has restarted its log chipping operations, saving about 100 jobs from getting the ax.

The restart marks the company's return to produce its own papermaking fiber, after using other sources for nearly a year, according to the Sun Journal. Company spokeswoman Janet Hall told the paper the in-house process is more economical. The log-unloading and chipping operations require about 35 employees, and the restart will also prevent the temporary layoff of 100 jobs announced in September.

The Ohio-based NewPage announced in October it planned to have the unloading and chipping operations running at 50% capacity by January.
