MERC to fight odor fine

The Maine Energy Recovery Company, or MERC, plans to fight a fine by the city of Biddeford for an odor violation, the first such violation the city has levied against the trash incinerator.

Biddeford is fining MERC $1,500 for allegedly violating the city's odor ordinance May 19, after the police department's code patrol officer reported an odor he believed came from MERC, according to Current Publishing. But MERC's general manager Ken Robbins says Monteith was not certified to detect odors and failed to allow MERC to assess the situation, which is part of a contract between the city and the company. MERC has not yet officially challenged the fine, but Robbins told the news outlet yesterday it intends to.

MERC is owned by Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems and has caused controversy in town for years because its trash incinerator is located downtown and has been called a stumbling block to economic development efforts.
