Fishing restriction plan delayed

The New England Fishery Management Council yesterday decided to forego imposing more restrictions on groundfishermen until it has enough data about New England's fisheries.

The council was considering a proposal that would have cut fishermen's days at sea by 70% by May 1, 2009, per a federal order to rebuild New England's groundfishing stock. But at its meeting yesterday in Portland, the council decided to wait until it received an assessment of the fishery from the National Marine Fisheries Service, according to the Portland Press Herald. The assessment is due in August, the paper said.

Meanwhile, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute yesterday released a report on the expected cost of implementing a new management system to monitor the groundfish fisheries in New England. A system to monitor the groundfishing fleet would cost between $1 million and $12 million per year depending on many factors, including its complexity and the percentage of trips and landings observed, acording to a press release from the GMRI.
