Mercy seeks 3.5-acre wetland expansion

Mercy Hospital is seeking a permit to expand its Fore River Parkway location into a freshwater wetland adjacent to the site, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The hospital is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fill roughly 3.49 acres of wetland to the southeast of their Fore River location, which opened in 2008.

The 250,000-square-foot expansion would house the hospital's emergency department, an expanded acute care center, support services and office space.

Mercy has proposed a $834,156 contribution to the Maine Natural Resource Mitigation Fund as means of offsetting the environmental impact of filling in the wetland, the paper reported.

The hospital's long-term plan is to transition most of its operations from its current State Street location to the Fore River campus by 2018.

The hospital is also currently in talks with Steward Health Care Systems of Massachusetts, a for-profit hospital chain that wants to acquire the hospital.
