Metro expands with service between Portland, Falmouth, Yarmouth and Freeport.

The Greater Portland Transit District is scheduled on Thursday to roll out its new Express Service, known as Metro Breez, that will travel down Interstate 295 offering nine daily weekday roundtrips and five on Saturday between Portland, Falmouth, Yarmouth and Freeport.

The Metro Breez service will have limited stops in each community for convenient, express service between destinations. The three new busses of the expanded Express Service offering will be able to hold 17 passengers, and are decked out with some of the latest accoutrements including WiFi, USB ports for charging personal electronics and extra storage room.

Passengers of the Metro Breez will also have access to real-time bus arrival information through the Southern Maine Transit Tracker.

“For many decades, MaineDOT and our transportation partners have worked to maintain and build new transit systems in Maine, so, it is wonderful to see this new innovative service begin,” Maine’s Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt said in a statement. “This accomplishment is significant to Maine’s transportation network, the City of Portland and the communities of Falmouth, Yarmouth and Freeport.”

The launch of Metro Breez marks the Greater Portland Transit District’s first expansion since Falmouth joined the district in 2009. The new Metro Breez Express Service is a three-year pilot program funded by local, state and federal partners.
