Midcoast chambers approve merger

Members of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville and Penobscot Bay chambers of commerce recently voted in favor of merging the two organizations.

At a vote Wednesday, 91% of Camden chamber members and 95% of Rockland's Pen Bay chamber members approved combining the two organizations under the name Maine Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce, according to a press release. The two chambers, in talks for two years on how to collaborate, proposed merging in February and held a series of informational meetings for their combined 1,000 members. In interviews in March, the heads of both chambers told Mainebiz that pooling resources will reduce redundancies and expand services for members, as well as strengthen efforts to bring more visitors and businesses to the midcoast. None of the chambers' joint eight employees is expected to be laid off. The chambers represent communities in northern Lincoln, southern Waldo and Knox counties.

The consolidation legally takes effect Aug. 1, but combining operations is expected to take longer, according to the release.
