Milbridge Theatre eyed for reconstruction

The former Milbridge Theatre, which closed after the December 2014 death of owner Dave Parsons, is in bad shape and has to be torn down, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Parsons’ brother, Richard, is willing to sell the property for $50,000 to Gateway: Milbridge, a group trying to bring back the theater, with the possibility of reconstructing it, Gateway board member Crystal Hitchings told the paper.

The land is assessed at $36,000 and the building at $45,300, a clerk at the Milbridge town office told the paper.

The project comes about during some revitalization upticks in the town.

Earlier in March, the BDN reported that representatives of a handful of businesses and organizations that have opened or relocated there in recent months have done so because Milbridge is a good place to be.

Gateway:Milbridge is named in recognition of the town's location as a full-service gateway to downeast Maine and the Bold Coast region. The organization is a downtown revitalization initiative that integrates the physical, cultural, economic, social and natural opportunities of the small coastal town, working in partnership with local organizations, businesses and residents to cultivate community, leverage resources and inspire economic health.

Hitchings told the BDN the group hopes to purchase the theater by June and demolish the existing building by the end of this year. The group estimates construction of the new building would begin in 2017, with a reopening expected in 2018.
