Mill closure to leave 18 jobless

A wood veneering mill in northern Maine is shuttering, leaving 18 people without jobs.

Georgia-based Shaw Industries Group Inc. announced Monday it will shut down the Appalachian Katahdin mill in Patten in the next several weeks, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company cited declining demand and increasing transportation and raw materials costs as reasons for closing the mill. Patten Town Manager Terri Conklin told WABI-5 news the decision was a "disappointment," and that the company was a large employer in the town.

Shaw Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., manufactures carpets and flooring coverings, and has more than $4 billion in sales and 25,000 employees, according to the paper.
