Millinocket Marathon: 12 degrees and 26.2 miles

The second running of the Millinocket Marathon, a fundraiser for the former mill town, attracted 550 people this past weekend.

Jonathan Beverly, a running writer, wrote about the experience for Competitor.com. In lieu of an entry fee, runners are asked to patronize local businesses or bring food for participants.

The race was organized a year ago by Gary Allen, a Great Cranberry Island native and director of the Mount Desert Island Marathon.

“While it’s hard to put a total dollar figure on the impact of the race, Allen says every hotel and motel bed in the region was filled and local restaurants were filled. Even if every runner spent as little as $200 to $300 on food, lodging, gas and souvenirs, that’s roughly $200,000 to $300,000 that was put into local businesses,” Beverly wrote.
