Gardiner tackles improving its historic downtown
The façade improvement grants through the Maine Office of Community Development’s Micro-Enterprise Assistance Grant Program are starting to take shape and gaining support among Gardiner city planners.
The Morning Sentinel reported that Gardiner officials are starting to shape the city’s implementation of the program to improve building facades in the historic downtown.
“We would like to see the downtown thrive because that’s good for the city,” Facade Committee member Kate Carnes told the paper.
In August, the city council voted to accept a $140,000 award from the program, and in September created a committee to oversee administration of the funds. City officials have also issued a request for qualifications for architectural services to identify an architect or firm that could help building owners with appropriate restoration, repair or replacement of facades in the historic district. Project funds could be available by April.
For Gardiner, the program is the latest in downtown revitalization projects. In November, the Kennebec Journal reported that Camden National Bank donated five buildings at 149-167 Water St. downtown to Gardiner Main Street for redevelopment.
