Mills nominated as Maine's first female AG

Legislators on Tuesday selected former prosecutor Janet Mills of Farmington to serve as Maine's first female attorney general.

A Democrat entering her fourth term in the House of Representatives, Mills awaits final confirmation from the full Legislature today. She would succeed Steven Rowe, who is wrapping up his fourth two-year term in the position, the limit allowed under Maine law, according to the Bangor Daily News. Mill's nomination leaves her House seat vacant.

Mills was the first female district attorney in New England, and represented Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties, Village Soup reported. Mills defeated John Brautigam of Falmouth and Sean Faircloth of Bangor. All three have served as an assistant attorney general, the paper reported.

Also Tuesday, Democrats nominated for new terms Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, Treasurer David Lemoine and state Auditor Neria Douglass, all of whom ran unchallenged.
