Minimum wage ballot initiative in the works

A coalition of three of the largest labor and worker’s rights organizations in the state — the Maine AFL-CIO, The Maine People’s Alliance and the Maine Small Business Coalition — collected nearly 75,000 signatures to secure a spot in November’s election for an initiative that would raise the state’s minimum wage to $9 per hour in 2017, followed by annual $1 increases until 2020.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the 76,420 signatures collected by the coalition Mainers For Fair Wages far exceeds the 61,123 signatures that were needed to bring the minimum wage increase proposal to November’s ballot.
