MMA lays off nine employees

Maine Maritime Academy has laid off nine people as a result of cuts in state aid announced last fall.

Thirteen administrative support positions were eliminated, four of which were vacant, and the college has also reduced hours for some positions, the Bangor Daily News reported. No faculty positions were cut. MMA officials learned last fall that the state would cut aid to the academy by about $476,000 this year, and the job cuts were announced late last month. Some of the layoffs took effect immediately, while other positions will continue into the summer, the paper reported. Some of the affected employees are union members who may be eligible to move into other jobs, and others were eligible for retirement. The measures are expected to eventually save the college up to $500,000.

The academy also plans to raise tuition by 5% next year, according to the paper.
