Maine Medical Center has purchased the One Riverfront Plaza Building in Westbrook for $10.75 million and plans to use the vacant office building to house its integrated information services team along with other administrative functions currently spread across eight office locations throughout Greater Portland.
The building has 131,000 square feet of office space and is located on the bank of the Presumpscot River. It was built in 2004 and was auctioned earlier this year after being vacant for more than a year following the departure of Disability RMS for another location in South Portland.
MMC recently closed on the property sold by One Riverfront Plaza Holdings LLC and expects to complete transition of its information services team to Riverfront Plaza by the end of 2017.
“We are incredibly excited to bring our Information Services team together in one location,” Marcy Dunn, senior vice president and chief information officer for Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth, said in a news release. “We believe this will increase our team’s operating efficiencies and ultimately benefit our providers, nurses and the patients who benefit from their care.”
MMC, a member of the MaineHealth system, is the state's largest medical center, with a license for 637 beds and nearly 6,500 employees. Its information services department supports the hospital and MaineHealth’s electronic medical record system that’s used by clinical staff as well as the large computer networks accessed by administrative and support staff employees every day.
Bringing its information services team together into one location, MMC said, can increase efficiency, reduce the number of real estate leases it holds and consolidate its investments in information technology infrastructure.
“We would like to thank the City of Westbrook and other officials who have welcomed us to their community with open arms and plenty of support,” said MMC President and CEO Rich Petersen. “We are looking forward to building on our presence in Westbrook and continuing to build on an important long-term relationship with a wonderful community.”
Westbrook Mayor Michael Sanphy highlighted MMC’s acquisition as further evidence of economic growth in the city of 18,000 residents resulting from several major commercial and residential projects.
“Westbrook is excited to welcome Maine Medical Center, Maine’s premier medical organization, into an expanded role in our city as we continue our growth,” he said. “Their purchase and use of this location on the river will be key to the ongoing development of our downtown. We have appreciated their presence in our community over the years and look forward to partnering with them in more significant ways with this major investment.”
