MMC prez blames contract dispute

Maine Medical Center's CEO says a contract dispute led to the unexpected news of his departure.

Vincent Conti, president and CEO of the Portland hospital, told the Portland Press Herald that he disagreed with contractual changes proposed by the board of trustees, saying those changes did not have to do with money but rather with "organizational issues." Conti did not say whether he was being fired or was resigning. He will leave his post in June.

Conti, 59, has run Maine's largest hospital since 1997, overseeing a decade of growth. He does not have another job lined up, the paper reported. Conti told the paper that he understands Richard Petersen, Maine Med's current COO, will permanently assume the responsibilities of president and CEO.
