Union leader refutes allegations

Mike Keenan, the suspended head of Bath Iron Works' largest union, says allegations made against him and the local union are "ludicrous".

In a rebuttal letter sent to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which took over day-to-day control at Local S6 on Monday, Keenan strongly denied allegations made by the IAM that the local union had mismanaged its finances and that pornographic material, including of "young children in suggestive poses," was viewed on lodge computers. "Folks won't make it out of the union hall looking at that," Keenan told Mainebiz this morning. "It's absolutely not tolerated."

He said the union first was informed of the pornography allegation last month, and responded immediately by examining every computer and interviewing union staff. Keenan said someone likely had opened an inappropriate email, and that a stronger email filter was required to block those types of emails. "At no time did they discover any child pornography," he said.

A hearing to discuss these allegations and the suspension of the union's leadership is scheduled for April 14 at the IAM's district office in Topsham.
