MNG, Summit to begin laying Augusta pipelines

Two natural gas companies vying for customers in the Augusta area are both primed to begin construction on dueling natural gas pipelines.

The Kennebec Journal reported that pipes arrived Monday for the Maine Natural Gas project and Summit Natural Gas of Maine officials say construction on their backbone line through the Augusta area will start May 1.

With that, the paper reported, both companies have also launched or planned media campaigns in the area in anticipation of each project's completion by the 2013 heating season.

The rate structures for service from both companies have been approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the paper reported.

Both companies were involved in heated legal battle over a contract to provide state buildings in Augusta with natural gas service earlier this year. Company officials said this week they were not aware if the state will reissue a request for proposals to provide that service.
