Restaurant owners convicted on illegal worker charges

Two brothers who own Mexican restaurants in Waterville, Biddeford and Westbrook were convicted Monday of harboring undocumented workers from Guatemala at their three locations.

The Kennebec Journal reported that 39-year-old Hector Fuentes and 37-year-old Guillermo Fuentes now await sentencing on the charges of conspiracy to harbor undocumented aliens for profit, and aiding and abetting document fraud. An attorney for Fuentes told the paper he plans to appeal the conviction, a process that would happen after sentencing.

The brothers' three restaurants — Cancun Mexican Restaurant in Waterville, Cancun Mexican Restaurant II in Biddeford, and Fajita Grill in Westbrook — will remain open in the meantime, defense attorney Lenny Sharon told the paper.

The brothers were arrested in 2011 after a series of investigations between 2006 and 2011 that found about 12 undocumented workers employed at the three restaurants.
