Modified sick time bill still opposed

A bill that would require employers to offer paid sick time has been pared down but is still coming under fire from members of the business community.

The Legislature's Labor Committee yesterday reviewed an amended version of LD 1665, "An Act to Prevent the Spread of H1N1," which originally called for all Maine employers to provide paid sick time. The bill has since been revised to exempt businesses with fewer than 50 employees, according to the Kennebec Journal. The amendment also reduces the amount of time earned from one hour for every 40 hours worked to one hour for every 80 hours worked, and eliminates seasonal workers by kicking in after an employee has worked 180 days, according to the Bangor Daily News.

However, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business of Maine say they are still opposed to the bill, according to the Kennebec Journal. The organizations told the committee the bill would hurt businesses' bottom lines and the state's ability to compete for businesses.

Legislators on the committee were split and postponed a vote until Thursday.
