More Mainers are unemployed than regional neighbors

The September unemployment rate in Maine increased to 4.1%, which is 0.1% above August’s rate of 4.0%, according to a preliminary report released by Maine's Department of Labor.

That puts the September unemployment rate in the state slightly lower than the 4.2% reported in September 2015.

New Hampshire reported an unemployment rate of 2.9%, Vermont 3.3% and Massachusetts 3.6%, according to the preliminary report. Maine's unemployment rate in September equaled the New England average of 4.1%.

Nationally, the U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 5.0% in September was a 0.1% increase from August and down from 5.1% from the same month last year.
