More workers requested at Kittery yard

Maine's congressional delegation has teamed up with their New Hampshire counterparts to lobby the U.S. Navy to increase the work force at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery by 1,000 employees over the next five years.

The lawmakers sent a letter to the Navy with the request, which is a response to a December 2008 report by the Rand Corp. that showed the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is a top-performing facility, but has the highest overtime rates of all public shipyards, which signals a work force shortage, according to the Foster's Daily Democrat. The report said an increase in the shipyard's permanent work force would increase productivity and be less expensive than paying overtime or hiring temporary workers, the paper reported.

In response, the Navy said it was still reviewing the Rand report.
