Morrison Center plans new residential facility
The Morrison Center, a nonprofit whose mission is to help people of all ages with disabilities, plans to open a new residential facility for young people age 10 to 21.
Keepmecurrent.com reported the nonprofit purchased the 125-acre former Opportunity Farm in New Gloucester for $1.35 million from Wayfinder Schools. Executive Director Mark Ryder told the newspaper he envisions adding buildings designed to respond to the unique challenges of residents with “significant, complex disabilities,” including traumatic brain injuries and behavioral disorders such as autism.
In January 2017, Morrison purchased an office building at 2250 Post Road in Wells to expand its services there. At the time, the organization was operating three campuses — its headquarters in Scarborough, a smaller facility in Portland and its first facility in Wells, at 526 Post Road.
According to The Morrison Center’s social media release on Facebook, Wayfinder Schools, established in 2011 through the merger of Opportunity Farm and The Community School, will continue to operate its Southern Maine Passages Program from offices at Morrison's Opportunity Farm, and will retain its campus in downtown Camden and their outreach office in Machias. Wayfinder serves 65 teen parents and at-risk youth each year, helping them reach their high school graduation goals and prepare for post-secondary success.
Morrison Center has been in operation since 1956 when it was first established as the Cerebral Palsy Center by Betty Morrison. Today the agency provides services for over 400 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities within nine counties in Maine.
