Move over Candy Crush — Maine fishermen might have a new favorite app

Finding yourself getting a headache from trying to make sense of the ins-and-outs of regulations for fishing in Maine? Well, there’s an app for that thanks to one enterprising West Gardiner fisherman.

The catalyst for Ron Cote — a self-described occasional fisherman — to develop the app, came from the difference in rules and regulations at fishing spots near his home compared to fishing holes near his camp in Eustis.

Before Cote developed his Fish Maine app, he found himself leafing through the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Open Water and Ice Fishing regulation book trying to make sense of special codes and the fishing spots to which they applied.

“I want to go out and have a good time, and do everything right,” Cote told the Portland Press Herald about his quest to make it easier to navigate regulations.

In addition to digitizing the regulation book into a searchable database, the app is also able to pinpoint a user’s exact location so that the rules and regulations of that spot can be accessed on the phone without external communications, much like a GPS.

Mark Latti, who works in outreach and communications for The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, told the Press Herald that although the app has the potential to be useful for anglers, it’s important to remember that the department’s regulation book is the only definitive source of regulations.

But the convenience of his app is still more than enough to keep Cote moving ahead with his project. Right now, the app is only available for Android smartphone users, but Cote is working on having the app make its way to the iPhone app store.
