In a recent issue, I wrote about my reaction to Maine's ranking in Forbes magazine. Many of your are likely aware that Maine moved from last to second-to-last on the magazine's “The Best States for Business and Careers,” slipping by Mississippi.
My column, as well as the Inside the Notebook from our online editor, Dylan Martin, sparked animated discussion. While some thought we raised good points, letter writers had additional thoughts. Sam Kelley argues that the startup community is not limited to young people, and cites the contributions of entrepreneurs ages 55 to 64 — a topic we addressed in a Feb. 10 cover story about “Encore entrepreneurs” — and contributions of immigrants.
In this issue, Senior Writer Lori Valigra has an in-depth Q&A with Tom's of Maine founder Tom Chappell, who it could be argued is an encore entrepreneur. Chappell talks about why he sold a majority stake of Tom's of Maine, his disillusionment with business, and his return with Ramblers Way, an apparel company he launched in 2009. Elsewhere in the issue, Dylan and Senior Writer James McCarthy have stories about two very real concerns businesses in Maine and elsewhere face. Dylan talked to both business owners and experts about cybersecurity, while Jim addressed the projected spike in electricity rates this winter.
