Mr. Paperback to shutter its 10 stores

Bangor-based bookstore chain Mr. Paperback is closing, leaving 80 people jobless. A sister company, Magazines Inc., is being bought, but its 40 employees will also be laid off.

Company officials informed employees Wednesday that both Mr. Paperback and Magazines Inc. will close by the end of April, according to the Bangor Daily News. Penny Robichaud, one of the company’s owners, attributed the decision to the economy and consumers’ changing habits for purchasing reading material. Mr. Paperback has 10 stores in Maine: Augusta, Bangor, Belfast, Caribou, Dover-Foxcroft, Ellsworth, Farmington, Presque Isle, Skowhegan and Waterville. Negotiations are under way to sell Magazines Inc., which distributes periodicals, to Worcester, Mass.-based Hudson LLC. Hudson would assume Magazine Inc.’s clients and move distribution to Gorham. A state rapid response team will be on hand to help employees find new jobs.

Both companies are owned by siblings Robichaud, Ralph Foss and Pamela Williams. Their parents, John and Evelyn Foss, founded the companies in the 1960s.
