MRRA makes bid for Navy property

The organization charged with redevelopment of the Brunswick Naval Air Station plans to formally request takeover of the majority of the base's property.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority's board of trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to submit a request to the Federal Aviation Administration to take control of the 750-acre airfield at no cost through a public benefit conveyance, according to The Times Record. Trustees also approved a request to the Navy to take over another 1,200 acres at a low cost through an economic development conveyance. The two requests account for the remaining base property not already promised to the Maine National Guard, Bowdoin College, the town of Brunswick and other non-Navy entities. The base property is 3,200 acres in total.

MRRA officials are hoping to negotiate with the Defense Department on the price of the 1,200 acres. DOD procedures mandate asking for market value for all base properties being closed nationwide, but MRRA plans to make a case for buying the property "as inexpensively as we can possibly get," MRRA Executive Director Steve Levesque told the paper. A provision that would support no-cost conveyances of base properties to local reuse groups is currently making its way through Congress and is slated for committee meetings later this month.
