Municipal tax increases appear inevitable

Town and city managers around the state are struggling to balance their 2008-2009 budgets in a budget climate many say is the worst in a decade, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Saco is considering a budget that does not include any money to repave pothole-heavy roads. Old Orchard Beach may sell part of 110 acres owned by the town around the ballpark to help fill an anticipated reduction of up $1.5 million in state revenue. And Portland, the state's largest city, is expecting deep cuts and layoffs to complete the budget the city manager will submit in two weeks, according to the news station WCSH 6.

Because property tax revenue isn't expected to increase in 2008 as a result of the housing slump, most municipal officials say tax increases are inevitable, the Press Herald reported.
