N. Maine makes Lonely Planet's top U.S. travel list

A top travel guide has named northern Maine to its list of the top 10 vacation destinations in the country.

Lonely Planet, a BBC Worldwide publication, placed the region at No. 7 in its list of 10 destinations the guide's authors say "U.S. travelers should add to their wish lists for the coming year."

Tourist industry officials told MPBN that the rating in Lonely Planet would help to draw travelers' attention to inland parts of northern Maine and Aroostook County, which the public broadcaster reported represents only 3% of the state's leisure tourists.

"Maine isn't only lobster rolls, lighthouses and rocky shoreline," the Lonely Planet authors wrote. "The woodsy interior, on the top half of the Maine 'thumb' reaching north to the Canada border, makes for a wilderness adventure."

This year's list also included stops like the Eastern Sierra in California, American Samoa and Glacier National Park in Montana.
