National Grid eyes deal with Maine wind farm

National Grid has plans to ink a 15-year contract with Boston-based wind farm developer First Wind for power it would generate at a proposed 48-megawatt wind farm on Bowers Mountain.

The Providence Journal reported that National Grid would pay 7.8 cents per kilowatt in the agreement, a price that is competitive with rates for power from fossil-fuel-fired power plants, for which costs are expected to rise.

According to a filing with state officials, National Grid estimates it would collect $49 million in below-market savings through a 15-year agreement.

The potential Rhode Island agreement follows the pursuit of similar deals with Maine wind farms by groups in Connecticut and Massachusetts for projects that are under development or regulatory review. All of the plans — in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island — require further approval from regulators in those states.

The Bowers Mountain wind farm also requires further regulatory review in Maine. The state’s DEP turned down First Wind’s permit application, a ruling the company has appealed. A decision on the wind farm from Maine regulators is expected on or before Nov. 4, the paper reported.
