Natural gas begins flowing in Waterville

A natural gas pipeline through Waterville this week began serving its first commercial customer, Inland Hospital.

The Kennebec Journal reported service to the hospital comes in advance of reaching customers at Thomas College and manufacturer Huhtamaki, other anchor customers contracting with Summit Natural Gas. The company has been competing for customers throughout the Kennebec Valley with Maine Natural Gas.

Michael Duguay, Summit’s business development director, told the newspaper that it is now serving around 1,200 customers in Augusta, Gardiner, Hallowell and Waterville and expects to have around 1,500 more customers in the Waterville area by the end of this year.

John Dalton, president and CEO at Inland, told the newspaper he expects to save more than $100,000 each year on heating costs by converting to natural gas.
