Bangor, Lincoln officials ponder youth retention

Local officials in Bangor and Lincoln are joining in an effort to develop ways to keep younger residents in the area, beating against a demographic trend that could hamper economic growth.

The Bangor Daily News reported Bangor City Council Chairman Ben Sprague and Lincoln Town Manager William Lawrence are collaborating on an effort to survey students at Northern Penobscot Tech in Lincoln about what opportunities would keep them in northern Maine after graduation.

The newspaper reported that Bangor and Lincoln are among the towns projected to decline in population through 2020, a trend of statewide concern that Sprague in Bangor said could “severely undermine any economic growth we hope to achieve.”
