Navy awards $94M USS Miami repair contract

The Navy has awarded a $94 million contract to General Dynamics subsidiary, Electric Boat, for repairs on the USS Miami submarine, which was damaged by arson while docked in Kittery in May.

The funding will provide for initial repair planning and to begin to purchase materials required to repair the nuclear submarine, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.

The Navy estimates full repairs will cost around $450 million — which the Navy approved in late August — and will be done through the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Electric Boat, based in Groton, Conn., and Huntington Ingalls Industries, based in Newport News, Va.

The Miami will remain in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard through the repairs, which are expected to be complete by April 2015.
