Former Leeds scrapyard makes Superfund list
An abandoned scrap metal facility in Leeds has made the federal Environmental Protection Agency's list of most-contaminated sites in the country.
The Associated Press reports that the site was added Friday to the EPA's list of Superfund sites alongside 11 other hazardous waste sites around the country.
The site, formerly Leeds Metal, will now be evaluated to determine who is responsible for the contamination. If the EPA identifies a responsible company or individual, that party could be on the line for funding or completing cleanup at the site.
The Superfund program has targeted and cleaned up 360 sites since starting in 1986, while a total of 1,676 sites have been added to the list.
Most of the sites added Friday were formerly factories where traces of arsenic, lead, mercury, benzene, copper and chromium were found. Each of the sites pose significant public health risks, according to the EPA.
