Navy awards BIW $30M for destroyer

The U.S. Navy has awarded Bath Iron Works a nearly $30 million contract modification for work on the next class of destroyers.

The $29.9 million contract modification will allow BIW to continue purchasing construction materials and help fund engineering and support services for the Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer DDG-1001, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. BIW is scheduled to build three DDG 1000 class destroyers.

In January, BIW laid off 130 designers and engineers from the new DDG 1000 destroyer class as design work on the first of the three ships ended. The Navy has awarded BIW some funding for advance work for the second and third ships in the line, and negotiations between BIW and the Navy for the full contracts are ongoing.
