Navy OKs BNAS reuse plan

The U.S. Navy has signed off on plans to redevelop the Brunswick Naval Air Station, a crucial step in turning the property over for civilian reuse.

The Navy has signed a "record of decision" for the disposal and redevelopment of the base and its related properties, the last step in an environmental impact study process that evaluated the impacts of the base reuse plan, according to a press release. The Navy in November issued the final impact study and took public comments on it before issuing the record of decision. In May, the Navy issued a draft statement that found no major impacts that would have forced reuse officials to rework development plans.

Per federal law, the final impact statement must be filed before the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority can take control of the property and transfer or lease it to other tenants. A handful of businesses and organizations have already agreed to become tenants at Brunswick Landing, the base's new name, when it's decommissioned in May.
