Navy to hand over BNAS airport

The U.S. Navy on Monday will officially transfer ownership of Brunswick Naval Air Station's airport facility to a civilian group managing its redevelopment.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority on Monday morning will hold a ceremony to announce the no-cost transfer of 730 acres of the base's airfield, including Hangar 6, where Kestrel Aircraft Co. plans to manufacture airplanes and eventually employ 300 people, according to The Times Record. The transfer is occurring through a federal process called a public benefit conveyance. The entire airport property is about 990 acres, and additional transfers for the remaining land will occur in the future. In January 2010, MRRA hired Massachusetts-based FlightLevel Aviation as the airport's fixed base operator to handle maintenance, aircraft services and refueling.

Monday's event marks the first major transfer of base property for civilian reuse, according to the paper. The rest of the base will be decommissioned in May.
