The Maine Board of Environmental Protection has rejected an appeal to revoke the permit of a 10-turbine wind farm in Oxford County.
The BEP turned down a request by citizens' group Friends of Spruce Mountain to repeal the Department of Environmental Protection's approval of the wind farm, according to the Sun Journal. In October, the DEP issued a permit to Massachusetts-based Patriot Renewables for a 20-megawatt wind farm along the Spruce Mountain ridgeline near Woodstock, a project Friends of Spruce Mountain opposed because of its proximity to homes. BEP voted down the appeal 5-1. A spokeswoman for the citizens' group said members had not yet decided whether to take the case to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and argued that the DEP should have held a public hearing on the project, according to the paper.
Quincy-based Patriot Renewables has proposed four wind projects in western Maine, including a 12-turbine wind farm on Saddleback Mountain in Carthage, which Franklin County commissioners voted earlier this week to support, according to the Morning Sentinel. A public hearing on the project is expected this month.
