NE fishing regulators eye hake quota increase

Regional fishery regulators say they're seeking to increase catch quotas for white hake by 13% in an effort to lessen the impact of steep cuts coming to catch limits for other groundfish species.

The Associated Press reported that means adding nearly another million pounds to the catch limit.

What that would mean for revenue is not known exactly as the last available price for hake was $1.26 per pound, the news service reported.

The New England Fishery Management Council will discuss the possible catch limit increase at an upcoming meeting and federal regulators have said they would act quickly on any suggested quota increase.

Earlier this year, regulators delivered a tough blow to the cod fishery in approving a 77% cut to catch limits, as the cod populations continue to dwindle.

Those reductions are expected to cut the size of the industry from $80 million in revenue last year to $55 million.
