Tanning ban vetoed; Senate drops capital gains tax cut

Gov. Paul LePage has vetoed a bill that passed the Senate yesterday that would ban anyone under 18 from using commercial tanning beds, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Maine's Senate on Wednesday followed House votes to approve that bill and reject a bill that would lower the state's capital gains tax.

The paper reported that the Senate rejected the proposed 50% cut of the state's capital gains tax in a 21-14 vote, led by Democrats who were joined by Republican Sen. Patrick Flood of Winthrop and Independent Sen. Richard Woodbury of Yarmouth.

Separately, the Senate voted 19-16 to advance the youth tanning ban that had support of all but two Democrats — Sen. Linda Valentino of Saco and Sen. John Cleveland of Auburn — and faced opposition from Republicans.

Opponents of that bill say the state should wait until another state law barring anyone younger than 14 from commercial tanning booths and requiring parental consent for older teenagers takes effect, the paper reported.

Supporters argue that tanning is dangerous and poses a risk of skin cancer.

The bill will now return to the Senate for reconsideration next week, the paper reported. The bill is the second vetoed by Gov. LePage during this legislative session.
