Around 1,480 Maine residents have signed up for health insurance plans in November through a new federal marketplace, as technical glitches from the website Healthcare.gov’s first month were largely resolved.
The Portland Press Herald reported the November tally is up from 271 insurance signups in October, when fewer than 10% of people who attempted to sign up were successful. In total, 1,751 Mainers signed up for insurance through the exchange since the website’s launch in October. Nationally, just 27,000 people had signed up in October, the website’s first month. In November, the federal website counted 137,000 enrollees, bringing the two-month total enrollment for plans under the Affordable Care Act to 365,000 as of Nov. 30.
The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that around 130,000 people in Maine are without health insurance. The group Consumers for Affordable Health Care estimates that between 50,000 and 75,000 people, in total, will sign up for coverage through the federal exchange in the first year.
