Neighbors of Lewiston residential proposal voice concerns over impact

At a neighborhood meeting Oct. 3, the proposed development of 240 apartment units at the former Pineland Lumber Co. site in Lewiston drew some opposition from neighbors concerned about its impact.

The Sun Journal reported that some neighbors of the proposed site said that bringing in people for 240 apartments would disrupt the quiet neighborhood.

“It’s nice and quiet, and we like it that way,” said Matt Roy, who lives near the site.

Other were concerned about impacts on the local real estate market, potentially affecting rents for other landlord.

According to a Sept. 24 memo by Doug Greene, the city's deputy of planning and code enforcement, the city’s planning, code enforcement and departments of Planning and Code Enforcement and Economic Development have been in discussion with Massachusetts-based Saxon Partners, which is interested in developing a 6-acre property at 10 Avon St., with the idea of marketing the units to staff at Central Maine Medical Center. According to a Saxon Partners memo, its development focus "is on residential development opportunities in close proximity to significant medical employment areas.”
